Elon Musk says he’s not a “right-wing extremist” but a “Democrat from 20 years ago”.
The tech billionaire took to his own platform, X (formerly Twitter), where he said he shared the sentiments of a meme shared by an account called Declaration of Memes. In the cartoon image, a couple are seated in car. The woman in the image has a speech bubble querying: “Aren’t you a Right wing extremist?” To which the man behind the steering wheel responds: “Nope, just a democrat from 20 years ago.”
Impressed by what he saw, the richest man on earth wrote: “That’s me 100%“

A number of responders to the Tesla chief’s post echoed the sentiment, stating that they hadn’t shifted their views, but the left had moved further left, giving the impression of extreme views.
One poster wrote: “Democrats have become pro-censorship, pro-silencing criticism, pro-cancel culture, pro-lawfare, pro-racism, pro-war, anti-meritocracy, anti-growth, etc. For the vast majority of my adult life, I’ve always thought of myself as being Center-Left. WTF happened to the Left!?”
Another said: “Same, same. I thought I was a fiscally conservative Democrat, but I was informed I’m far right, apparently.”
A third added: “Democrats have moved so FAR LEFT that they have less than 20% to 40% support on most major issues that Voters care about. They call everyone who doesn’t agree with them FAR RIGHT which is most of the public.”
While a fourth mentioned: “I’m also still a democrat from deep inside, but the interpretation of a democrat seems to be different nowadays.”
And a fifth commented: “Yep. I’m an independent that leans right, but the democrats have damn near pushed me all the way to the right at this point.”
The post comes as the “Elon Musk” effect has driven record numbers of people to take up stargazing.
Demand for telescopes is rocketing to astronomical levels as space fans zoom in on Mars, Saturn and Uranus, with sales up 1,380% on this time last year.
Experts put it down to a string of factors, including the SpaceX boss sparking huge interest in space with his plans to colonise Mars.
There has also been a surge in ET-hunting and UFO-spotting here, with Brits the most alien-obsessed nation in Europe. Around 650,000 of us searched for “proof of alien life” on Google last year.
